Kalvakuntla Kavitha Biography:
Kalvakuntla Kavitha, born on March 13, 1978, is an Indian politician affiliated with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi party. Since 2020, she has served as a Member of the Legislative Council representing Nizamabad. Prior to this, from 2014 to 2019, she held the position of Member of Parliament representing the Nizamabad Lok Sabha Constituency. Kavitha is the daughter of the former Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
Kalvakuntla Kavitha Career & Family:
Kalvakuntla Kavitha was born in Karimnagar to Chandrashekhar Rao and Shobha. Her father, a prominent leader in the Telangana Movement, became the first Chief Minister of Telangana state. He hails from Chinthamadaka village in Siddipet District, Telangana.
She pursued her B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering from VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology and later completed her Master of Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi. Following her education, she worked as a software engineer in the USA before returning to India in 2006 with a commitment to serve the people of Telangana.
Kavitha is married to Devanapalli Anil Kumar, a businessman, and they are blessed with two sons, Aaditya and Aarya.
Early Life and Political Engagement
After marrying in 2003, Kavitha relocated to the United States with her husband. However, she returned to India in 2006, driven by a commitment to support her father’s endeavors. With the formation of Telangana in 2014, led by her father, Kavitha actively contributed to his party’s success in both state and national elections. Despite facing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Nizamabad, she continued her engagement in public service.
Involvement in the Telangana Movement
In 2006, Kavitha immersed herself in the Telangana movement, inspired by her father’s leadership and the aspirations of millions of Telangana residents. She extensively toured the region, gaining firsthand insight into the challenges faced by its people. Witnessing poverty, unemployment, and societal issues, she felt compelled to act.
Formation of Telangana Jagruthi
Recognizing the deep-rooted cultural pride among Telangana’s populace, Kavitha founded Telangana Jagruthi in 2006, officially registered in 2007. With a vision to awaken Telangana society, the organization aimed to unite women and youth, fostering pride in the region’s rich heritage. Telangana Jagruthi played a crucial role in mobilizing support for the statehood movement through peaceful means.
Telangana Jagruthi Skill Centers
Kavitha spearheaded the establishment of Telangana Jagruthi Skill Centers, providing vocational training to over 8500 students across the state, facilitating their entry into the workforce.
Promotion of Bathukamma Festival
Affectionately known as “Kavithamma,” Kavitha championed the celebration of Bathukamma, a significant floral festival in Telangana. Through Telangana Jagruthi, she organized elaborate festivities not only locally but also globally, expanding the festival’s reach to over 30 countries.
Labor and Trade Union Engagement
Actively involved in labor and trade unions, Kavitha serves as the Honorary President of various organizations, including the Telangana Rashtra Vidyut Karmika Sangham (TRVKS) and the Telangana Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association (TAWHA), advocating for the rights of electricity employees and Anganwadi workers, respectively.
Leadership in Bharat Scouts and Guides
As the first female state chief commissioner of the Telangana chapter of the Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS & G) Association, Kavitha holds a unique position in India. Her appointment at a young age underscores her dedication to youth empowerment and community leadership.
Political Ascendancy
Following the establishment of Telangana state in 2014, Kavitha emerged as a prominent political figure, contesting and winning the general elections from the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency. Her resounding victory, with a substantial majority of over 1,64,184 votes, underscored her strong connection with the people, cultivated through her active participation in statehood protests and demonstrations.
Advocacy in Parliament and Public Life
As a Member of Parliament (MP), Kavitha fervently advocates for Telangana’s interests and addresses various national issues. Despite facing defeat in the 2019 general elections to Arvind Dharmapuri, she remains committed to public service.
Transition to the Legislative Council
In October 2020, Kavitha was elected as a Member of the Legislative Council from the Nizamabad Local Authorities’ Constituency in a by-election, succeeding the disqualified incumbent, R Bhoopati Reddy. She secured a significant mandate with 728 out of 823 votes. Subsequently, in December 2021, Kavitha was re-elected unopposed to the Legislative Council from the same constituency. She officially assumed office as a Member of the Legislative Council on January 19, 2022.
Parliamentary Engagements
Within Parliament, Kavitha serves on several committees, including the Estimates Committee, the Standing Committee on Commerce, and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water, and Sanitation.
International Representation
Kavitha’s political engagements extend beyond national borders. She has participated in parliamentary delegations to countries such as Cambodia and Laos with the Vice President and to the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, with the Lok Sabha Speaker’s delegation. Additionally, she has been nominated to the Steering Committee of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) India Region, contributing to efforts aimed at increasing women’s representation in parliaments worldwide.
Controversial Allegations
In 2023, Kavitha faced serious allegations of direct involvement in the Delhi liquor scam. The Enforcement Directorate initiated questioning and investigation into her purported role in the scandal. Subsequently, on March 15, 2024, Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the liquor scam.
