Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi’s war biopic, Amaran, has made a spectacular debut at the box office, breaking records in Tamil Nadu on its release day. Based on the remarkable life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, the film has garnered widespread critical acclaim. Released on Diwali, Amaran achieved a net collection of ₹21 crore in India, marking it as the highest first-day earnings ever for a Sivakarthikeyan film.
On its opening day, Amaran recorded a net collection of ₹21.65 crore in India and a total worldwide collection of ₹34 crore, which includes ₹9 crore from international markets. The film’s gross collection in India stood at ₹25 crore.
Surpassing Dhanush’s Raayan, Amaran now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Tamil film opener of 2024. Despite facing fierce competition from major releases such as Lucky Baskhar, KA, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Singham Again, the film, starring Sivakarthikeyan alongside Sai Pallavi, delivered one of the strongest opening performances for a Tamil film this year.
On its first day, Amaran achieved impressive occupancy rates across Tamil theaters, with morning shows at 63.63%, afternoon screenings at 81.74%, evening slots at 82.36%, and peaking at 84.01% during the night shows. Early estimates from trade analyst Sacnilk project that the film is set to gross between ₹16-17 crores in Tamil Nadu, establishing it as the highest opener for Sivakarthikeyan and the third biggest of 2024. The film also performed well in Telugu states, with first-day earnings estimated at approximately ₹4.50 crores.
The excitement surrounding Amaran was evident in advance ticket sales, which were among the highest for a Tamil film this year. The strong pre-sales created a solid foundation for the film’s opening, and positive audience feedback further drove robust spot bookings, enhancing overall collections.
Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, Amaran tells the inspiring story of Major Mukund, an Ashok Chakra recipient celebrated for his valor during a counterterrorism operation with the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sivakarthikeyan takes on the lead role of Major Mukund, while Sai Pallavi portrays his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese. The film features a strong supporting cast, including Bhuvan Arora, Rahul Bose, Lallu, Shreekumar, and Shyam Mohan, contributing to its compelling narrative.
