Let’s explore its cultural importance, traditions, and rituals.

Historical Roots

Bathukamma has ancient roots dating back to the Kakatiya dynasty, celebrated since the 12th century. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, a symbol of female power and fertility. Bathukamma signifies the importance of nature and agriculture, marking the beginning of the harvest season. The festival is observed annually from Mahalaya Amavasya to Durga Ashtami, just two days before Dussehra. Following Bathukamma, Boddemma is celebrated, marking the end of the monsoon season.

Cultural Significance

Bathukamma reflects women’s empowerment and solidarity. Women come together to share stories, prepare Bathukamma, and sing traditional folk songs. They offer prayers and rituals to Goddess Gauri, presenting flowers and offerings. Each day of the festival is dedicated to a specific theme, with women dressing in traditional attire. The names of the Bathukamma vary each day: the first day is Engili Poo Bathukamma, the second day is Atukula Bathukamma, the third day is Mudda Pappu Bathukamma, and so on, culminating in the ninth day, which is Saddula Bathukamma. Each day features a unique offering to the goddess.
