The Bathukamma festival is a vibrant celebration of life for the people of Telangana. It is a unique tradition where flowers are worshipped, symbolizing the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of the region. For nine days, the streets of Telangana come alive with joy and festivity.
The celebrations begin on the first day with “Engilipuvvu Bathukamma” and conclude on the ninth day with “Saddula Bathukamma.” This year, the Bathukamma festivities started on September 28. The first two days saw the celebrations of Engilipuvvu Bathukamma and Atukula Bathukamma.
On the third day, September 30, the festival honors the deity with “Muddapappu Bathukamma.” The Bathukamma is made using three layers of flowers such as chrysanthemum, hibiscus, Sitammajada, and Ramabanam, which are beautifully arranged in lotus-shaped bowls.
The deity Gowramma is placed on top, and morning prayers are performed. In the evening, women gather to sing and dance around Bathukamma, followed by the immersion of the floral arrangement in a water body. As part of the third day’s tradition, an offering of roasted flour, green gram, sugar, and jaggery is prepared and shared.
