Bathukamma Day 5: The Celebrations of Atla Bathukamma

Bathukamma is a symbol of Telangana’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, a festival that holds deep roots in the region’s customs. This vibrant celebration, which represents the essence of Telangana’s way of life, brings joy to every street across the state for nine days.

The festivities begin on the first day with “Engili Pula Bathukamma” and culminate on the ninth day with “Saddula Bathukamma.” This year, the Bathukamma celebrations started on September 28. Over the past four days, people have celebrated various forms of Bathukamma, including “Engili Puvvu Bathukamma,” “Atukula Bathukamma,” “Muddapappu Bathukamma,” and “Nanabiyyam Bathukamma.”

The fifth day of the Bathukamma festival is known as “Atla Bathukamma.” On this day, women prepare the Bathukamma by arranging flowers like Tangedu, Gunugu, Chamanti, Mandara, and Gummadi in five layers. Along with the floral arrangement, traditional pancakes made from flour, known as “Atlu,” are prepared. In the evening, women gather to dance and sing around Bathukamma, which is later immersed in water. The celebrations conclude with everyone sharing the offerings as prasadam.
