Vicky Kaushal’s much-anticipated period epic Chhaava hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, generating immense buzz. Directed by Laxman Utekar, this grand biopic of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj has been mounted on an impressive scale. With strong advance booking trends, industry experts predict a massive opening, potentially setting a new benchmark for Valentine’s Day releases in India.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Chhaava sold nearly 5 lakh tickets across India through advance bookings, raking in a solid ₹13.79 crore before its release. Given this momentum, industry insiders estimate the film will comfortably cross ₹20 crore on its opening day, with some projections even touching ₹22 crore in net domestic collections. If achieved, Chhaava would surpass Sky Force’s ₹15.30 crore opening day record to become the biggest Bollywood opener of 2025 so far.
Early box office reports indicate that by noon, Chhaava had already amassed ₹6 crore net across India. With evening and night shows expected to witness a surge due to Valentine’s Day celebrations, the film is on track to deliver a blockbuster opening.
For Vicky Kaushal, Chhaava is set to be his biggest career opener, surpassing the ₹8.20 crore first-day collection of Uri: The Surgical Strike. Beyond this personal milestone, the film is also poised to break an industry record. Currently, Gully Boy (2019) holds the title for the highest Valentine’s Day opening with ₹19.40 crore net. Given current trends, Chhaava is expected to outperform that figure with ease.
Inspired by Shivaji Sawant’s acclaimed Marathi novel Chhava, the film brings history to life with a powerful narrative and stellar performances. Vicky Kaushal portrays the fearless Maratha ruler Sambhaji Maharaj, Akshaye Khanna takes on the role of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, while Rashmika Mandanna shines as Maharani Yesubai. The film has been widely appreciated for its grand visuals, gripping storytelling, and standout performances, particularly those of Vicky and Akshaye.
As the box office battle unfolds, all eyes are on Chhaava to see if it can rewrite records and set new benchmarks for Bollywood’s historical dramas.
