Darshan Thoogudeepa, the prominent actor, is seeking interim bail from the Karnataka High Court, citing serious health issues, including numbness in both feet that necessitates surgery. His request comes after his arrest in June alongside fellow actor Pavithra Gowda and 15 others, in connection with the torture and murder of one of his fans, Renukaswamy, aged 33, in Bengaluru.
During a court hearing on Tuesday, Darshan’s lawyer emphasized the urgency of the surgery, which is proposed to be conducted at a private hospital in Mysuru. However, the public prosecutor opposed this request, arguing that the medical documents lacked specifics regarding the duration of hospitalization and suggested that the procedure could be performed at a government facility instead.
Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty raised concerns, questioning the necessity of a hospital in Mysuru and recommended that a Bengaluru doctor evaluate Darshan to assess the urgency and duration of the required surgery. The prosecutor further insisted that Darshan should undergo a health evaluation by a state-appointed medical board.
After listening to both sides, the judge has reserved his verdict, with an announcement expected today.
The police investigation revealed that Renukaswamy had reportedly sent obscene messages to Gowda, provoking Darshan’s alleged rage, which ultimately led to the tragic incident. The chargesheet outlines the horrific treatment Renukaswamy endured, including electric shocks administered to his private parts. Reports also indicate that Gowda allegedly instigated the murder and was present during the torture.
Renukaswamy’s father, Kashinath Shivanagoudar, expressed his anguish over his son’s suffering, stating, “Despite my son’s constant pleas and acknowledging his mistakes, they tortured him without mercy. The thought of the pain he experienced is unbearable for us.”
As this case unfolds, the focus remains on the legal proceedings surrounding Darshan and the tragic circumstances leading to Renukaswamy’s death.
