Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan has etched its name in the history books by becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time at the worldwide box office. The film, which had already made headlines by being the first Malayalam movie to earn a ₹100 crore share globally, has now dethroned the survival drama Manjummel Boys from the top spot.
In just 10 days since its release, Empuraan has grossed over ₹250 crore globally—a staggering feat for a Malayalam-language film. Despite facing criticism and mixed responses in non-Malayalam markets due to its controversial elements, the political thriller continues to dominate at the Kerala box office.
However, the real test for Empuraan will begin on April 10, when big releases like Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly and Mammootty’s Bazooka hit the screens. How the film holds up amidst this competition will be interesting to watch.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also plays a significant role, Empuraan is the sequel to Lucifer and features an ensemble cast including Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Indrajith Sukumaran. The film is jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Lyca Subaskaran, and Gokulam Gopalan, making it one of the biggest collaborations in Mollywood.
