Hyderabad residents continue to face soaring tomato prices, with the cost now reaching ₹100 per kilogram.
Within just a week, prices jumped from ₹80 to ₹100 per kg, and traders predict further increases.
Due to this price surge, sales volume has significantly decreased as Hyderabadis opt for other vegetables instead of tomatoes.
The rise in tomato prices in Hyderabad is attributed to a supply-demand mismatch caused by crop damage following heavy rainfall in Telangana and other states. Intermittent rainfall has led to significant crop losses, resulting in a shortage of tomato arrivals in the city.
In response to the price hike, some restaurants and eateries have started reducing the use of tomatoes in their food preparations.
This isn’t the first time tomato prices have surged; previously, prices reached as high as ₹200 per kg.
With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming days, it remains to be seen how much further tomato prices will rise.
