About “Indian 2”
“Indian 2” is one of the most eagerly awaited Tamil films of the year, marking the reunion of Kamal Haasan and director S Shankar after 28 years. The film is a sequel to the 1996 cult classic “Indian,” and is produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies.
The movie features a star-studded cast including Siddharth, S J Suryah, Bobby Simha, Gulshan Grover, and the late Nedumudi Venu. While AR Rahman composed the music for the original film, Anirudh has taken over musical duties for the sequel.
Kamal Haasan’s Return as Senapathy
In “Indian 2,” Kamal Haasan reprises his iconic role as Senapathy, affectionately known as ‘Indian Thatha’ by fans. The character is depicted as a 106-year-old master of the ancient Indian martial art, ‘varma kalai,’ fighting against corruption.
The decision to revive the character of Senapathy, despite his advanced age, was a frequent topic of discussion during promotional events. At a press conference in Mumbai in June, Kamal humorously remarked that he hopes to continue acting even at the age of 120.
Director Shankar on Senapathy’s Age
Director Shankar defended the choice to bring back Senapathy by referencing Lu Zijian, a 120-year-old Chinese martial artist known for his impressive physical capabilities. “There is a martial art master in China, his name is Lu Zijian. At the age of 120, he is performing martial arts, he is flying and kicking and all. This Senapathy character is also a master, master in an ancient martial art called Varma,” Shankar explained, as quoted by PTI.
“Indian 2” hit theaters on July 12, and despite its fluctuating box office performance, it continues to be a significant release in the Indian film industry.
