Indian 2, the much-anticipated sequel to Kamal Haasan and Shankar’s classic Indian/Bharateeyudu, has ended its theatrical run in disappointment. The film faced a wave of negative feedback from audiences, starting from its opening day, leading to a disastrous box office performance. In an effort to mitigate the losses, the team has opted for an early OTT release. Indian 2 is set to premiere on Netflix tomorrow, August 9th.
The film’s troubled journey began even during production. Director Shankar, known for delays in his projects, further distanced himself from Indian 2 for reasons unknown. The project was later revived by Udhayanidhi Stalin under Red Giant Movies, but splitting the film into two parts proved to be a costly misstep. With the poor performance of Indian 2, the future of Indian 3 now hangs in the balance.
Rejected by the audience from day one, the film’s team had no option but to go for an early OTT release. Netflix, the leading OTT platform, acquired the digital rights and will begin streaming Indian 2 on August 9th. It remains to be seen how the film will fare in the digital space.
