Indian tech giant Jio has recently formed a significant partnership with Disney/Star India, marking a major development in the OTT sector. As part of this collaboration, Jio Cinema will soon merge with the Disney+Hotstar app. With this merger, all Jio Cinema content is expected to shift to Disney+Hotstar.
Disney+Hotstar, already one of India’s leading OTT platforms, is known for its vast collection of films, TV shows, series, and sports content. Due to its superior infrastructure and larger user base, Hotstar will continue to drive the content strategy, with Jio Cinema being phased out. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the rebranding of Disney+Hotstar, though there are speculations that the new platform could be named “Jio Hotstar.”
This merger follows a previous attempt in the industry, where Zee and Sony had announced plans to merge but made no significant progress. It will be interesting to see how Jio and Disney manage their joint operations in the competitive OTT space moving forward.
