Jyotika, known for her impactful roles in South Indian cinema, has recently found herself at the center of controversy. As she expands her presence across India, some fans feel she is turning her back on the industry that shaped her.
In a recent interview, Jyotika spoke about the South Indian film industry’s tendency to focus on male leads, with female characters often limited to supporting roles or dance numbers. She expressed her belief that storytelling in the South hasn’t always done justice to women.
She also shared that after becoming a mother at 28, she consciously chose roles that aligned with her values. However, her comments have not gone down well with many fans, who see them as an insult to South Indian cinema. Some argued that if a celebrity cannot draw audiences to theaters, producers may hesitate to invest in them.
Criticism has even extended to her husband, actor Suriya, with some suggesting he should guide her on the realities of the film industry. A few even went as far as questioning their marriage, claiming that Suriya marrying a North Indian woman was a mistake.
Despite the backlash, Jyotika has been part of several female-led films, though their box office reception has been mixed. Some fans believe she is attempting to appeal to Bollywood audiences, even though Bollywood itself has faced criticism for sexism. Others argue that South Indian cinema has produced strong female leads and continues to evolve.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how Jyotika will respond to the growing criticism.
