Nag Ashwin Reddy is an acclaimed Indian film director and screenwriter, primarily known for his contributions to Telugu cinema. He made his directorial debut in 2015 with the coming-of-age philosophical drama “Yevade Subramanyam.”
In 2018, he directed the biographical film “Mahanati,” which starred Keerthy Suresh as the legendary actress Savitri. The film received widespread acclaim and won several awards, including Best Feature Film in Telugu at the 66th National Film Awards in 2019. Nag Ashwin Reddy Early Life & Parents & Education:
Nag Ashwin Reddy was born into a Telugu family in Hyderabad, Telangana, to parents Jayaram and Jayanthi Reddy, both of whom are doctors. He has a younger sister, Nikhila Reddy, who also pursued a career in medicine. Ashwin attended Hyderabad Public School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the Manipal Institute of Communication. He further honed his skills by completing a Film Direction course at the New York Film Academy. Additionally, he is related to D. Nageshwara Reddy, the founder of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG). His family’s roots trace back to the Kurnool district.

Nag Ashwin Reddy began his career as an assistant director on the film “Nenu Meeku Telusa?”. He then worked with Sekhar Kammula as an assistant director on “Leader” (2010) and “Life Is Beautiful” (2012), and also took on minor acting roles in these films.
Debut and Critical Acclaim:
Ashwin made his directorial debut with “Yevade Subramanyam” (2015), which received mixed-to-positive reviews and became a sleeper hit, eventually gaining a cult following. In May 2016, he announced his next project, a biopic of the Indian actress Savitri, titled “Mahanati.” Ashwin dedicated six months to researching Savitri’s life by reading articles and books, and interviewing old journalists and actors who had known her.
Supported by Vyjayanthi Movies, principal photography for “Mahanati” began in May 2017 and concluded by March 2018. The film was released on May 9, 2018, and was met with both critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards.
In February 2020, Ashwin announced his next project, a science fiction action film titled “Project K,” also backed by Vyjayanthi Movies. The production was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but filming eventually began in July 2021, with a futuristic set constructed at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. With a budget of 600 crore, it is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. Prabhas was cast as the lead actor, followed by Deepika Padukone as his co-star. In October, Amitabh Bachchan was confirmed for a full-length role, and Disha Patani joined the cast in May 2022. In June 2023, Kamal Haasan was also confirmed to be part of the film. The music is being composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic. Originally slated for release on May 9, 2024, the new release date has been set for June 27, 2024, due to the state and central elections.
