Kangana Ranaut Forced to Sell Property Amid ‘Emergency’ Release Delay and Censor Board Issues

In New Delhi, actor and politician Kangana Ranaut revealed that she had to sell her Mumbai property following the delay in releasing her directorial film Emergency due to issues with obtaining a censor certificate. Reports earlier indicated that Ranaut sold her Pali Hill bungalow in Bandra for ₹32 crore, a property she bought for ₹20.7 crore in 2017. Speaking at News 18 Chaupal, Ranaut, who plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, shared, “I had invested my personal assets into this film, expecting its theatrical release. But with the delay, I had no choice but to sell the property during tough times.”

Emergency, a political drama written, directed, and co-produced by Ranaut, was originally scheduled for a September 6 release, but the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not yet approved the film.

Ranaut also expressed concerns about censorship, stating that OTT platforms require more scrutiny than films due to the nature of content available. “With the advancement of technology, the Censor Board is becoming obsolete. We need to rethink this approach, especially given the content on OTT platforms, which should be more regulated,” she said. The actor emphasized the impact of uncensored content on children, noting that inappropriate material is easily accessible online.

Emergency has faced controversy, particularly from Sikh organizations like the Shiromani Akali Dal, for allegedly misrepresenting the community. The matter is currently being addressed in court.

Ranaut also expressed her frustration with the lack of support from the film industry, saying, “No one from the industry has come forward to stand by me. I feel completely alone in this.” The actor further commented on protests against the film in Punjab, where some groups are burning her effigies and stirring up public anger.

The film, produced by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in key roles.
