Kangana Ranaut Sells Mumbai Bungalow for ₹32 Crore Amid Emergency Film Release Delay

Just days after the release of her directorial debut Emergency was delayed, actor-filmmaker Kangana Ranaut sold her Mumbai bungalow, which housed her production company Manikarnika Films, for ₹32 crore. In an interview with News18, Kangana explained her decision, stating, “Naturally, my film was supposed to release. I put all my personal property on it. Now that it’s not released, that’s what properties are for—times of crisis.”

The property, located in Mumbai’s prime Pali Hill area, was purchased by Kangana for ₹20 crore in 2017 and became the office of Manikarnika Films in 2019. However, in 2020, parts of the property were demolished by the BMC due to alleged structural violations. Kangana believed she deserved compensation but refrained from pursuing it, citing the use of taxpayers’ money. She has since bought a new office space in Andheri for ₹1.56 crore.

About Emergency:

Co-produced by Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, Emergency was initially scheduled to release on September 6 but was postponed due to delays in obtaining certification from the Censor Board. Kangana took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the delay, promising a new release date soon.

The film is a biographical political thriller focusing on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who imposed the 21-month Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. Kangana portrays Indira Gandhi in the movie. Emergency has faced several controversies, including backlash from Sikh groups.

Zee Entertainment, the film’s co-producer, had approached the Bombay High Court to seek a censor certificate for the film, claiming the CBFC had withheld it. While the Bombay High Court declined to issue a directive, the CBFC was ordered to make a decision by September 18. Although the film has since been certified with a few cuts, a new release date is still pending.
