Suriya’s much-anticipated film Kanguva had a disappointing debut, underperforming at the box office over its opening weekend. Despite the high expectations and a substantial budget, the film grossed only between ₹80-85 crores, including 3D charges—well below the anticipated ₹100 crore opening. With a four-day weekend at its disposal, Kanguva failed to reach the expected ₹100 crore mark, leaving fans and industry experts stunned.
The situation worsened with alarming signs for the coming days, as advance bookings for the following day remain virtually non-existent, pointing to a significant box-office disaster. The breakeven point for Kanguva is set at ₹400 crores worldwide, but the film has only managed to recover about 20% of that target during its opening weekend. If the trend continues, a loss of around 70% for buyers seems inevitable.
This underwhelming performance has become a major setback for both Suriya and the filmmakers, particularly since the film’s expectations were inflated to match its high production values. Had the makers managed expectations more realistically, Kanguva might have had a better reception. As it stands, the film is on track to become one of the most disappointing box office stories in Suriya’s career.
