As L2: Empuraan gears up for its theatrical release on March 27, excitement is building over its expansion into the Hindi market. Initially, there were uncertainties about whether the film would secure a spot in major national multiplex chains. However, with PVR actively promoting it, the landscape has shifted dramatically, signaling that the makers have agreed to a 56-day (8-week) OTT exclusivity window.
Many South Indian blockbusters, including Vijay’s GOAT and Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, declined this clause, resulting in their exclusion from national multiplexes. However, L2: Empuraan has successfully secured backing from PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, making it one of the few Malayalam films to achieve a nationwide multiplex release.
This strategic move indicates the filmmakers’ confidence in the movie’s box office potential, as they are not rushing for an early OTT release. With a record-breaking budget of over ₹100 crore and phenomenal pre-release sales, Empuraan is poised to set new benchmarks for Malayalam cinema.
While the final OTT deal is yet to be locked, reports suggest that JioHotstar is in the race to acquire streaming rights. If finalized, Empuraan could secure the highest-ever OTT deal for a Malayalam film, further cementing its status as a game-changer on a pan-Indian level.
