China has traditionally been a lucrative market for Indian films, particularly those from North India. However, South Indian movies, including blockbusters like Baahubali 2, have struggled to replicate this success.
Baahubali 2 earned around $12 million in China, a decent figure but underwhelming considering the film’s release costs and initial buzz. Despite a strong opening, it failed to maintain momentum.
Now, Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja has turned the tide, finally cracking the Chinese market. The film has performed exceptionally well, with its second weekend surpassing the first, signaling a promising box office run.
With this trend, the film is expected to surpass Baahubali 2’s $12 million mark by the next weekend and is on track to achieve $20 million or more during its full run. Maharaja has set a new benchmark for South Indian films in China, paving the way for future successes.
