The blockbuster success of Pushpa 2: The Rule is undoubtedly the story of 2024, not just for its record-breaking box office collections but also for the offscreen controversies and an unfortunate incident during its premiere in Hyderabad. While the drama surrounding the film has died down, its success continues to resonate, especially as it maintains momentum even in its fourth week since release.
In its fourth week, Pushpa 2 amassed an impressive ₹37.25 crore in India, with ₹8.75 crore on Friday, ₹12.5 crore on Saturday, and ₹16 crore on Sunday. In comparison, Baby John, which released over the Christmas weekend, earned ₹28.97 crore in five days, with ₹12.75 crore on the same weekend. Other big releases like the Malayalam film Marco and the Kannada film Max earned ₹8.2 crore and ₹14.95 crore, respectively, far behind Pushpa 2‘s weekend numbers. This dominance showcases the massive appeal of Allu Arjun’s film, which continues to outperform even the biggest regional films released during the festive season.
Pushpa 2 has broken numerous records, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the first Hindi film to cross ₹100 crore in its third week, despite being a dubbed version of the Telugu original. This success has caught the Hindi film industry by surprise, prompting industry leaders to reconsider the power of South Indian cinema. On a global scale, the film has crossed ₹1719.5 crore by the end of Week 3 and is fast approaching the ₹1800 crore mark, which may be reached around the New Year.
With no major releases until mid-January, Pushpa 2 is expected to continue its dominance, particularly in the Hindi market. Meanwhile, the underperformance of Baby John might lead to a broader release for the Hindi-dubbed version of Marco, which has been making waves in the South. Directed by Sukumar and starring Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, and Sreeleela, Pushpa 2 will likely enjoy an obstacle-free run until the Pongal and Sankranti releases in the second week of January.
