Ritu Varma Biography:
Ritu Varma (born 1990) is an Indian actress known for her work in Telugu and Tamil cinema. After starting her career with short films and supporting roles, she gained widespread recognition for her lead role in the Telugu film Pelli Choopulu (2016). Her performance earned her the prestigious Nandi Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Telugu.
Ritu Varma Family:
Ritu Taran Varma was born and raised in Hyderabad, though her family hails from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Fluent in Telugu, she dubs her own lines for her Telugu films. She completed her intermediate education at Villa Marie College for Women in Hyderabad and later earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Malla Reddy Engineering College. After graduation, she participated in the Miss Hyderabad beauty pageant, where she was named the first runner-up.
Ritu Varma Career:
Ritu Varma gained recognition with her performance in the Telugu short film Anukokunda, which won Best Film at the 48HR Film Project competition in 2012 and earned her the Best Actor (Female) award. The film was also screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner in 2013.
Her feature film debut was in Baadshah where she played a supporting role as Pinky. She then starred as the lead in Prema Ishq Kaadhal, portraying a costume designer opposite Sree Vishnu. Varma followed this with Naa Rakumarudu (2014) and then appeared in Yevade Subramanyam, which earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress (Female) at the IIFA Utsavam.
Varma’s breakthrough came with the romantic-comedy Pelli Choopulu alongside Vijay Deverakonda. The film was a major commercial success, winning the National Award for Best Telugu Feature Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Telugu. Varma received critical acclaim for her performance, winning both the Nandi Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Telugu.
Following this success, she starred in Keshava opposite Nikhil Siddharth and appeared in an Amazon Pongal 2017 advertisement. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon, impressed by her work in Pelli Choopulu, cast her in the Tamil film Dhruva Natchathiram with Vikram. In 2019, she reunited with Nani for Tuck Jagadish. Varma also led the Tamil romantic film Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal (2020) opposite Dulquer Salmaan, which was both a critical and commercial hit.
In 2021, Varma starred in Ninnila Ninnila with Ashok Selvan and Nithya Menen, released directly on ZEE5 to positive reviews, particularly for her portrayal. The same year, she appeared in Varudu Kaavalenu, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video.
In 2022, Varma starred in the anthology Modern Love Hyderabad on Amazon Prime in the segment “Fuzzy, Purple and Full of Thorns”. She followed this with the bilingual Oke Oka Jeevitham/Kanam and Nitham Oru Vaanam.
In 2023, Varma starred alongside Vishal and S. J. Suryah in Mark Antony. Additionally, her long-delayed film Dhruva Natchathiram is expected to release this year.
