Vettaiyan, starring Rajinikanth, had a decent opening weekend at the box office but struggled to maintain momentum starting from its first Monday. The film grossed around ₹210 crore in its first week, but the second weekend saw little improvement, resulting in a flat performance. After 11 days, the total gross is expected to reach approximately ₹235 crore. With its lackluster second-weekend performance, Vettaiyan is now heading towards being labeled a flop.
The film’s worldwide run is expected to end well short of ₹250 crore, far below the ₹325 crore breakeven mark. This would result in a recovery of only 75% of its investment. The Telugu version, in particular, has been a disappointment, recouping only two-thirds of its pre-release business, marking it as a flop in that market.
This marks Rajinikanth’s second consecutive setback this year, following Lal Salaam. In response, he has reportedly agreed to work on another film for Lyca Productions at a reduced fee to compensate the production house. However, fans are optimistic about his upcoming collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for the film Coolie, which is expected to break existing box office records
