Vetrimaaran’s much-awaited sequel, Viduthalai 2, featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier in pivotal roles, recently hit the screens. With the first installment being both a critical and commercial success, expectations were sky-high for this sequel. Interestingly, Hollywood’s Mufasa: The Lion King was released on the same weekend, adding competition to the box office.
During the opening weekend in Tamil Nadu, Viduthalai 2 outperformed Mufasa, enjoying a strong lead. However, the scenario shifted drastically during weekdays, with Mufasa gaining momentum and overtaking Viduthalai 2 in collections. The Hollywood film’s steady performance now puts it on track to match the lifetime earnings of the Tamil film in this region.
As of now, Viduthalai 2 has grossed approximately ₹35 crores in Tamil Nadu, while Mufasa: The Lion King stands at around ₹25 crores. Despite its initial advantage, Viduthalai 2 is facing a significant dip in momentum and has failed to impress audiences outside Tamil Nadu. This underwhelming response has raised questions about whether it met the lofty expectations set by its predecessor.
