World Teachers’ Day is a global celebration honoring educators for their vital role in shaping the future of students. This international event commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO and UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers. This landmark recommendation established key standards for the rights and responsibilities of teachers, as well as guidelines for their training, employment, and working conditions.
Teachers have a unique opportunity to profoundly impact their students’ lives, helping shape their futures and bringing personal fulfillment. To recognize this significant role, UNESCO declared september 5th as World Teachers’ Day in 1994, celebrating the invaluable contributions of educators. The day is observed in collaboration with UNICEF, Education International (EI), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), marking the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the status of teachers. In 1997, UNESCO introduced a complementary Recommendation addressing the status of higher education teaching personnel.
The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2024 is “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.” This theme emphasizes the need to address the global teacher shortage and strengthen the teaching workforce worldwide, as stated by UNESCO. The day also explores how education systems, communities, societies, and families can better recognize, appreciate, and support teachers.
