In a surprising turn of events, the modest romantic comedy “Premalu,” made on a budget of Rs 3 crore with a young cast, has emerged as a box office sensation. Directed by Girish AD and starring Naslen, Mamita Baiju, and Shyam Kumar, the film has surpassed expectations, completing a successful 26-day theatrical run and amassing Rs 90 crore worldwide, with Rs 49.5 crore from India alone.
Produced by Fahadh Faasil and Dileesh Pothan under Bhavana Studios, “Premalu” is poised to achieve even greater success as it continues its theatrical journey. The film, which collected Rs 9 lakh on its opening day and Rs 12.6 crore in its first week, witnessed a surge in footfalls during subsequent weeks, with the second week grossing Rs 14.85 crore, fueled by strong word-of-mouth publicity.
Notably, the Telugu distribution rights for “Premalu” have been acquired by SS Rajamouli’s son SS Karthikeya for a significant sum, with its release scheduled for this week.
Set predominantly in Hyderabad, “Premalu” follows the story of an unemployed young man who falls in love with an IT professional and decides to stay in the city to pursue a relationship with her. The film offers a refreshing and humorous take on modern romance.
Director Girish AD, known for his previous successes “Thanneer Mathan Dinangal” (2019) and “Super Sharanya” (2022), continues his streak with “Premalu,” showcasing his versatility across genres.
